Homeowners often confuse carbon monoxide (CO) with natural gas leaks. While both are associated with gas appliances, they are distinct physical hazards requiring different detection and safety procedures.
Natural Gas: The Odor You CAN Smell
Raw natural gas (methane) is non-toxic to inhale in small quantities, but it is extremely explosive. Because raw methane is odorless, utility companies inject mercaptan, giving it a strong sulfur/rotten egg smell. If you smell rotten eggs, you have an unburned natural gas leak.
Carbon Monoxide: The Toxic Gas You CANNOT Smell
Carbon monoxide is a toxic byproduct of incomplete fuel combustion produced by damaged water heaters, cracked furnace heat exchangers, or blocked chimney flues. CO is completely odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
Every Rialto residence must have operational CO detectors outside each sleeping area as mandated by California Health & Safety Code §17926.
